Equal Rights Amendment
First brought about in 1923, the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would guarantee equality under the law for women. The Amendment states:
Section 1. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.
Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.
Section 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification
Taking a look at the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, it grants all males completely equal rights. American woman fought for this Amendment to protect the rights of all citizens, but it only includes the word "male," which specifically protects males only. Looking at the 19th Amendment, this grants all women of legal age the right to vote. This amendment only protects their voting privilege and nothing else.
In 1972, the Equal Rights Amendment passed the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. In 1980, the Amendment fell three states short of ratification and it was removed from its position.
